As Good As Can Be Expected
If you read enough of these reviews, you will understand that this cannot entirely replace a standard vacuum. However, for keeping your floors 95% clean in between vacuuming this will work just fine. I only vacuum my house using a standard vacuum cleaner probably once every 3 weeks, so this is a big help in keeping the dust, dirt, and dog hair under control in the mean time. I have been using it on laminate and tile floors, very little on carpet. In my Office I have a very low pile rug and it has no problems with it. However, my family room has a pretty thick wool rug and the Roomba tends to get stuck on it when trying to move from laminate to the rug, or it will bump up against the rug and think it is a wall and bounce off, sometimes getting somewhat "stuck" in a confined area for maybe 10 minutes. So I don't use it too much in the family room, but it works great everywhere else. You do have to be careful about cords laying on the ground, as it can run over them and then drag whatever the cord is attached to. On the upside, it has helped me keep clutter off the floors a little better than I had previously. It does pick up a lot of dirt, much more than I was expecting. I usually just close off the room I want it to vacuum and let it work unsupervised, then come back in an hour to clean out the dust bin and filter and put it back on the charger. If you have a Harmony universal remote, you can program your remote to control this thing, too, kind of like a remote control toy car. It is useful for making it chase the dogs, but not a whole lot else. One thing not specified in the instructions is that you can pause the Roomba while it is cleaning by pressing the "Clean" button on top of it, and pressing that button again will make it resume vacuuming. Overall I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
Very Useful, but with some flaws
First, let me say that I love my roomba. It does a tremendous amount of cleaning without a lot of fuss, and I eventually want to get a scooba when I have the money. It's made a believer out of my husband who first thought it was a silly gadget that wouldn't work. But it does. Quite a bit. We've even named it Dobbie after the house-elf in Harry Potter.
What it will do: It's awesome on hard floors and low pile rugs. It keeps the dust down, which is very important because I have allergies. It does an ok job on dog hair, but with my number of dogs (4 Malamutes inside plus a cat), life can get hairy. Literally. I can set it to go and it does a pretty decent job as long as I keep it away from electrical cords and occasionally move it off the stairs (sometimes, despite the cliff sensor, it does get stuck).
Now, onto the negatives. The dust bin is way too small and must be emptied constantly. The air filter and intake is beneath the robot, which means it sucks in the dirt and hair into the filter, which must be dusted out and replaced often. They say that the roomba handles pet hair easily, and while that's true, there's a huge maintenance associated with that. Hair gets twisted around the brushes, wheels and whatnot constantly, and if not cleaned out, will cause undue drag on the motor and shorten the life of the battery and the robot. After each use, I'm in there cleaning the brushes, wheels, and filter.
The battery is a huge negative. I've had to buy a new one because the old one wouldn't hold a charge. The new one seems to be better, so maybe they've gotten the battery issues worked out.
Even with these negatives, the roomba is so handy, I can't imagine not using one. We're running it daily in one of three areas of my house because the dogs drag dirt in all the time. It keeps me from having to do a fair amount of work. This is one robot, in my mind, that is worth dealing with the negatives.
Don't Bother
I have the green (sage!) 400 series pet version which this silver model most closly resembles. OK, when they work they do a good job. However I don't expect to have to replace the $70.00!! battery after little over a year! All the battery consists of is some rechargable C cells connected in series and put in a speciality box to fit the vacuum. Thankfully there are some cheaper kits right here on Amazon. All in all, I wouldn't bother, just get yout normal vacuum out and get it done yourself.
