Generally competent, but it has its foibles3
First let me say that I agree with people who say that the robot does a competent job of cleaning. You should SEE the dust bin after vacuuming! I am also in awe etc etc, but I'm going to try to focus on things that others have not mentioned.

My 550 (560 actually, I think...it came with a few more odds and ends in the box) is actually my second Roomba. The first was the Discovery SE, one of the 400 series. The 400 was pretty good with two exceptions: 1) It would not work on rug fringe. It gets hopelessly tangled in less time that it takes to say "Wait!" The second problem with the older 400 series is that the battery dies fairly quickly if you do not use it VERY frequently. I use it once/week and by second battery is showing its age.

In any case, the 500 series is advertised to be able to deal with rug fringe, and indeed it does so reasonably well. It is also supposed to be able to do 4 rooms using these "lighthouses" that have been previously mentioned. To summarize, these are little gadgets that put out an IR (UV?) beam that the robot can see; it generally will not cross the beam, so you can use the beam to mark off rooms. After a certain amount of time, the robot sends out an RF signal to the lighthouse, and the LH lets it through into the next room. Repeat for 4 rooms if desired. Then the robot knows how to find its way back to where it started to plug itself back in to recharge. Cool.

Here are the problems with the lighthouse scheme: First, the beam gets wider very quickly. So there is a fan-shaped area in front of each lighthouse that never gets cleaned. In other words, when moving between the two rooms, the beam gets shut off but when cleaning either side, the robot will not enter the fan shaped area that the beam covers.

The second lighthouse problem is that the robot seems to use time rather than room size or complexity to decide when to move from one room to the other. In other words, for larger or more complex rooms, it simply does not cover the room before moving on to the next.

A non-lighthouse problem that you should know about with the 500 series is that I think they must be lower-slung than the 400 series. My 500 robot is not NEARLY as good is climbing up onto a rung as the 400. The 400 got stuck in fringe, but without fringe, it is nearly flawless. The 500 tends to push the rug around, bunch it up, and even get caught if it bunches up the rug in a corner that it has not way to get out of without getting back over the rug.

You MUST be sure there are no cords on the floor. For example, a floor lamp, a computer power cord, etc. My robot has gotten caught when I forget, and nearly pulled down a few items with dangling cords.

And finally, I have one room with hardwood floor and a rug about 6 or 8 inches smaller than one dimension of the room. So there is a 6+ inch "valley" between the rug and the wall. The 500 series does not clean the 6+ inch valley well at all. It goes along it, but does not pick up dirt well. I think it is probably that the brush is on the rug on one side and on the floor on the other, but is touching nothing in the middle. I end up taking a dry mop and going along the valley and pulling dirt out into an open area where the robot can get it.

Given all that, though, the robot saves a LOT of work. If there is something special happening, I would probably bring out the hand vac and get all the little corners and fans and valleys that the Roomba does not reach, but for every-day/week vacuuming, it is way easier than doing it by hand despite its problems.

Makes floors cleaner and life easier4
Have had it for a month now and I use it several times a week, almost every day. 5 people, 2 cats and 6 dogs make a lot of dirt! Roomba handles it well.

Likes...
* can vacuum daily, without really doing it!
* does a pretty good job. much better than me doing it myself, which i would only find time for once a week
* docks itself successfully most of the time
* stops and tells me verbally to clean it's brushes if they are full of pet hair
* lighthouses are a great feature
* sometimes it gets lost and needs help finding it's dock. i put this under "like" cuz i think it's cute

Dislikes...
* it's making a black line where it rubs on my baseboards. think i'll get felt furniture feet to put on it's face
* it's supposed to slow down prior to bumping into things. it does this sometimes, but for wide, solid objects only, like walls. it runs full-speed into table legs and other thin objects. half the time it runs into the wall at full speed too

Worth Mentioning...
* have to Roomba-proof prior to vacuuming. a very small sacrifice to having the bulk of the work done for me
* small dirt canister. but the brushes always need to be cleaned when it's full anyway, so if i have to pick it up to clean the brushes, might as well dump the canister anyway
* you'll get your fingers dirty cleaning the brushes, so not a good option for germaphobes
* gotta take a regular vacuum cleaner to the rugs once a week or two. and i use a hand vac for the corners and behind objects as needed, maybe once a week.
* got mine at a "popular warehouse store" for a hundred bucks less, where i can also return it at any time, even a year or more, if it starts to crap out on me

TOTALLY worth it. Would recommend it to anyone. Only gave it 4 stars because there are improvements to be made, but it's AWESOME. But you will be disappointed if you think it's zero maintenance. It makes your life easier. But it doesn't think for itself or clean itself so it needs a little help and maintenance. Also makes a good pet. I call mine Sally.

This is one amazing robotic vacuum, but take care of it!5
After trying the 550 for a while now, it is everything I imagined it to be as a self-cleaning companion! One thing I first noticed after it's first few uses is the amount of scratches and scuffs that accumulate on the sensors. Unfortunately, out of the box there's no way to protect these sensors as they're bare to running into things (especially thin bed posts and desk corners). So what I did was bought some protective film(non adhesive) to manually put over the sensors and it has done well at protecting the Roomba! Others Roomba owners have said their Roomba performs just fine with scratches, but these are their eyes and I wouldn't doubt that it's important to keep them in top shape.

Proper care, including cleaning the brushes and dust bin out after EVERY use are essential in maintaining the longevity of the Roomba. This is what I believe is the root of all the negative reviews. Also, The initial 16 hour charge (even if it turns green earlier) is supposed to increase battery life, so be patient!

It has been well worth the investment and the cleaning performance has picked up loads of dirt and dust I didn't know existed on my floor. As long as you treat your Roomba as you would be treated, clean it, and make your room "Roomba proof", you won't regret it!

Product Description

With dramatically improved navigation, cleaning coverage, vacuum pickup, and particle filtration, the Roomba 550 vacuuming robot picks up amazing amounts of dirt and debris with the simple touch of a button. The powerful unit features innovative spinning side brushes that grab dirt and dust from corners and along wall edges, as well as two high-speed, counter-rotating brushes that pick up pet hair, cat litter, food crumbs, and other debris from floors. The vacuum sucks up the debris and deposits it into a large, easy-to-empty bagless dustbin, and its improved fine-filtration system traps dust, pollen, and other allergens inside the unit, reducing infiltration into the living environment. For added convenience, the vacuum's cleaning head automatically adjusts to transition from wood, tile, and linoleum to carpets and rugs, while improved anti-tangle technology ensures it won't get stuck on cords and rug fringe. If the unit begins to pick up a cord or carpet tassel, it will automatically reverse the direction of its brushes to extract the item. A gentle-touch bumper system senses obstacles so the vacuum automatically slows its approach, gently touches the obstacle, then redirects to continue cleaning under or around the object. Because it cleans under beds, couches, and other hard-to-reach areas, it actually vacuums more of the floor than a standard upright. The vacuum also senses dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them, and it uses built-in cliff sensors to avoid stairs and other drop-offs. In addition, invisible barriers can be set using the unit's Virtual Wall Lighthouse system. To mark off-limit areas, simply place a Virtual Wall at a doorway or other opening and adjust the infrared beam setting to the distance of the opening. The unit automatically detects the beam and will not cross it.

iRobot Scooba Floor Washing Robotic Hard Surface Cleaner

iRobot Scooba Floor Washing Robotic Hard Surface Cleaner

Now I find iRobot Scooba Floor Washing Robotic Hard Surface Cleaner You can see Now!

BuZZ from Customer Shopping

Works like a champ5
I purchased the newest version of the Scooba and the newest version of the Roomba.
I was kind of skeptical when I saw the Scooba demonstrated on TV,so I thought I would do a test myself.
I have 4 dogs, who traipse through the kitchen many times daily, bringing with them leaves, sand, shedded hair...you name it.So...I swept the floor first.I then ran the new Roomba over the same area, kitchen floor.I let it run for about 15 minutes, turned it off,and inspected the brushes and dirt-catching chamber.I was amazed, and mortified...because all this time I thought I was doing a good job of sweeping. My old Roomba is still running well..I use it upstairs exclusively.
The amount of hair and dirt the new Roomba collected was astounding!!! The only drawback to the machine is that it may get stuck under the lower kitchen cabinets, which it did,but it told me it was stuck, and I moved it. Because the lower cabinets are difficult to sweep even with a conventional broom,I forgave the robot. So now, when I want to use the Roomba,I just sweep under the cabinets.Which takes about 1 minute. No huge time sacrifice on my part.
So,after the Roomba swept the floor,I mopped the floor using a conventional mop, and mop bucket.I used a good floor cleaner(vinyl floor). It looked pretty good after I was finished, and then after it was dry,I put the Scooba to work.
First,it made a thorough sweep of the floor to sweep up any light dirt I may have missed, and that the mop might have missed. Then,it started its scrubbing cycle, and saturated the entire floor(after "learning"the layout of the floor) with the cleaning solution(you can also use white vinegar if you wish).I just let it do its thing and after about 45 minutes,it stopped and let me know the tanks had to be changed. Here came the moment of truth:I turned it over and emptied the dirty water into the mop bucket. It was as black as ink.Again,I was horrified. It is difficult to keep a house clean with 4 dogs,2 cats and 4 parrots, but I always thought I was doing a good job.Was I ever wrong, and was I ever surprised to see what the Scooba had accomplished.
I am completely satisfied with the Scooba, and some of my friends will be getting them for Christmas!!I have told the absolute truth here:I am mad for the Scooba.Using any kind of mop is just not good enough any more.I have to use my little, faithful Scooba.Give it a try.

Poor Purchase1
Bought this as a gift 6 months ago and it worked without issue MAYBE 4 times....all the other times we had to deal with some type of error code. After writing to iRobot customer service and trying their 2 different solutions(without success); they suggested we buy a new battery. Okay...we spent another $60 to replace the battery, NOW there is a DIFFERENT error. Tech Supports next suggestion was to replace the machine! NO way, no how!! Can't invest any more money in such a poor product. I totally agree with the other review, if you purchase something at this price, it should last (at least) a few years without problems!

Scooba is a neat product, but expensive4
I liked the idea of the Scooba, but having to use the Clorox cleaning product (it doesn't contain bleach--actually it doesn't list the ingredients on the label) was a deal breaker. Then I read in other reviews that you could use white vinegar instead, which we use for cleaning anyway. That sold me and we've had the Scooba for over a year and a half with no problems (note: this is the 5900 model, which Amazon doesn't seem to carry anymore, though there is the 5800--would that be a newer model?). I have to admit after the initial novelty wore off, it isn't used a whole lot. Sometimes it's just easier to wipe the floor than get it out and empty and clean it afterward. But it does a great job on white kitchen tiles and also wood parquet floors, it cleans and dries the floors well and is fun to watch it work, though unless you get a lot of use out of it, it's a rather expensive toy. We have the basic Roomba too, which gets more use. Both Roomba and Scooba take up a fair amount of space, especially to keep plugged in and charged--I see they now have a storage caddy for the Scooba.

Life Span1
Great product - for a while. Died of the common (terminal) spinning disease after ~ 2 months work, thats about $150.00/mo. for a vacuum.

FOR ANYONE WITH ARTHRITIS!4
This little helper deserves a five-star rating but I only gave it a four because I need to clean it after every use! The cleaning enables it to perform at its peak! I have linoleum and indoor/outdoor carpeting throughout the house which helps it run more efficiently! I have Rheumatoid Arthritis which makes vacuuming (especially underneath furniture) very painful and most times impossible! Running my little iRobot Roomba every day enables me to vacuum less often (especially with 3 dogs inside)! Also, it's a blessing to have when unexpected company will be coming! The remote control feature is great! Now all I have to do is teach it to wash dishes...and make the bed....LOL!

Roomba4
I owned all the new Roomba and the scooba since 2002. (they all stopped working between 6 month to 1 year, lol) That one is probably the best value, it does the job and when it breaks you do not get sick because it was not $400 bucks trashed for only 1 year... I wish irobot would do more solid vaccum cleaner but I'm sure they are learning from past experience and they will get better and better. (I am an irobot fan)

Amazing.5
The Roomba 580 is well worth the extra bucks. The lighthouse capability for the Roomba to travel through a series of rooms and then back to the home station is the plus that makes the Roomba worth it, to me. Instead of moving it room to room on your own, you press start and get multiple rooms vacuumed with no oversight on your part. For anyone with kids or pets, this is a must-have. Don't be discouraged the first few times you run the Roomba, as it learns from all its mistakes and typically does not repeat them as it learns the shape of your rooms and where obstacles might be.

Impressive but still a toy4
It deserves 3 stars in terms of functionality, but because I am impressed I'll give it 4.
The main problem is coverage of a large room with a lot of furniture (coffee tables and chairs). It has a set of nifty heuristics to deal with obstacles and corners. However, it doesn't learn the shape and size of a room - it uses another set of heuristic algorithms for coverage. The result? It gets "stuck" in some parts of the room for a long time for no apparent reason, like a creature with a fried brain. It all depends on furniture arrangement in a particular room. I bet it works just fine in an empty room. It compensates for this deficiency by running for a very long time.

In summary:
- it works, but the vacuum is not very powerful so the results are not perfect;
- the dirt compartment is small - you have to empty it after each use;
- it takes a lot of time - you might not care until the battery gets weaker;
- you may need extra virtual walls if you have spaces with many doors/openings (or you can use strategically placed obstacles);
- you may have to temporarily move furniture, remove cables (it "eats" them);
- the fun toy factor is a plus;

My house is rather large, but not a mansion (3 bedroom with large spaces).

Roomba Rocks4
First off the 4 star rating is for the actual Roomba product. I have used the Roomba daily for the past 2 months, and although it was a rather expensive purchase in my opinion for a vacuum, it has been well worth it. I rate its automated usefulness similar to a dishwasher or washing machine, and would not want to go back to living without this product. This would be a 5 star product if it didn't require so much maintenance in cleaning out the brushes every use.

We have 5 kids and a dog and therefore a lot of dirt, grit and hair ends up on the floors. I have laminate flooring throughout the house, so I can't attest to how well the iRobot cleans carpet, but it has done a great job on the hard floors. In one charge it can clean the main living areas of the home including the kitchen, dining area, halls and living room. It is amazing how much stuff it picks up.

It is a little noisy, but less so than many regular vacuums. It sounds about like a hair dryer, except you are not holding it near your head so it is not quite that loud.

The way it covers a room in a combination of following walls, spirals, and zig zagging around and bouncing off things takes it awhile to finish a room, much longer than I could manually sweep the floors, but the beauty is I don't have to do the work, other than clean out the dirt bin, filter and brushes.

With all the hair it picks up, I find I have to remove and clean the brushes with every use, as the manual recommends. Putting this off and using without proper maintenance only causes problems. I found brushes don't properly spin and work if I don't keep the hair and fibers cleaned out. This includes unscrewing the little side brush from the bottom and removing to get the stuff that winds underneath it.

I do make use of the lighthouses to control keeping it in one area until finished until moving onto the next, and also occasionally find the wireless command center to be handy. I haven't used the scheduling features as I prefer to manually set it cleaning when I want and this way I can make sure the kids have floors picked up of obstacles before it runs. If I didn't have a couple of toddlers that leave toys throughout the house, I think the scheduling option would be great.

iRobot sells this model directly and also calls it Item Number: 58001 with a total of 3 lighthouses, 11 brushes, 7 filters, wireless command center, charger, home base, and a silver faceplate. Amazon sells this with 2 lighthouses, 2 extra brushes, 1 extra filter, wireless command center, charger and home base as main package and also sells an accessory pack with the extra items including 1 more lighthouse, 3 bristle brushes, 3 flapper brushes, 3 side brushes, silver faceplate and 6 filters.

Make sure you know what comes with what you are ordering and review all options to order and what accessories are included! I ordered from Amazon, got a good price, and got the extra items included at the same price, but they should have it packaged the same as on the manufacturers website if they are calling it the same model and item number instead of selling some of it as a separate item unless you order it the right way. 0 stars to Amazon on this item for making this a problem for their customers.

not good with rugs4
I bought this for my old house when I had a lot of carpet. Now I have moved into a large home with hardwood floors and large rugs, I do not use it very much. It has frayed the edges of the rugs and gets caught on them. While using it at my old house, I LOVED IT, but now I don't have a a lot of use for it. Also, in our bedrooms, the carpet has large, loopy pile, it runs very slow and sounds as if it is struggling to work. I don't want to ruin the motor! Great product all in all and I would recommend (and have) to friends and family.

Good for people with dust allergies3
Moderated with realistic expectations, this is a nice little vacuum. I can set it going in one room of the house while I do something else (work, read a book, cook, or whatever) in another room. It saves me a little time, and I avoid getting the cloud of vacuum-dust in my face - a real boon for me.

I really like the fact that the Roomba consistently cleans UNDER my furniture - this makes a huge difference for people with dust mite allergies.

Before running the Roomba, I do have to do some tidying - pick up any small objects on the floor, get loose cables out of the way, move any floor carpets it may catch on - which is a bit of a hassle.

I love my Roomba5
We have all hardwood floors, and a dog, along with a family full of allergic people. Before I got my Roomba this Christmas, I could sweep the house four times a day and still be chasing around little balls of black lab fur. Not to mention the various little bits of dry cracker crumbs and cereal bits that my 3 kids seem to leave a trail of wherever they travel. Now I run the Roomba once a day, and my floors are clean. Having a Roomba is like having a perfectionist maid whose only job is ridding your floors of debris. That said, you should know there are caveats before you buy:

1. Make sure your kids don't have a bunch of stuff under their beds. Mine are notorius, and I ask them before I run the Roomba, "Is your room Roomba ready?" If not I shut their door's while they make it so. If the Roomba sucks up a string or some loose paper, it will stop and make a sound that is actually beeps but sounds to me like it is saying, "Uh Oh" until you fix the problem, then it will make some beeps that I imagine are saying, "Ok, back to work."

2. Some people have complained about the lack of room for dust and debris in the bin. I haven't found that to be a problem. I empty it about every two cleanings. It is really easy, and doesn't bother me.

3. If you want to have clean window sill's you'll still need your vacuum with the crevice tool. The Roomba does not magically jump up there and suck up all the little crumbs that your children drop in the window track as they look out the window while they eat and wish that they were outside. Although it would be nice, which brings me to...

4. It isn't completely self sufficient. Before I told my husband to go ahead and buy me the Roomba for Christmas (who am I kidding, I ordered it myself and had my Mom wrap it up and write that it was from him) I debated the pro's and con's. After reading some of the reviews I told him I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money or not. When he asked me why I told him I wasn't sure if it was worth it, since you still have to empty it, clean the brushes, plug it in and turn it on when you want to vacuum, not to mention ridding the floor of stuff that could hurt it. He just laughed at me and said, "So what you want is something that will clean the floor, without you having to lift a finger, provide any maintainance, or expend any effort for under 200 dollars. I think you need a wife."

That said, I don't regret the purchase at all. It has really sped up my routine, because I just start it when I wake up, after I pick up any thing that it could choke on. It cleans the floor while I go about my other chores, and by the time I'm finished, it usually is too, so I empty it and guide it to the charger, no big deal.

My floors have never been cleaner, especially under the furniture. I'm so happy to not have to be worried that I'll find my 8 month old with a dust bunny in his mouth, or that an inopportune gust of air will blow a heap of hair out from under the piano right when we are having company. Really it is the best 200 dollars we have ever spent.

They work just fine.5
These filters work just fine and last as long because they are the same filters I have purchased from iRobot, but they are cheaper.

I buy all my filters from Amazon.com unless they are running a special give away at iRobot.

Great Filters...5
I bought these for My Roomba Model 4130, I try to clean these up before I replace them so they will last much longer. Fast shipping and great service.

iRobot Roomba 4910 Replacement Filters5
These filters work great. I like to use a clean one each time I run my Roomba and now I can just switch them out. Then when several get dirty I hand wash them, let them air dry, and reuse.

Irobot ate my daughter's school project - But will NEVER go back to the old style vacuum 5
My husband and son got together and thought I would just love an Irobot. I complained a bit that they ordered it...but would give it a try. They set it up quickly. In a few hours off it went....and it has been going every day for the past 3 months. What a great find! Never will I got back to the old style of vacuum. We have a cat which sheds some...but I have 3 kids who track in dirt daily. When I come home from work, I have a freshly vacuumed house. It finds its home base about 90% of the time. If it does not, it is usually our fault. The Irobot ate my daughter's school project she left on the floor - was repairable! It has eaten up many cat toys. It will go after anything you leave on the floor. No mercy! It does not nick the woodwork! So in the end....love, love love it!!! Never will I go back. Only quality issue - one of side brushes fell off...still worked great. You do need to empty the container each day...takes about 20 secs....you will be amazed the dirt it picks up each day...To think I was walking in the stuff for days.First time in history a child goes to school and says my robot ate my homework, not the dog!!! By the way I am a mechanical engineer...so passes my test!

    Better than I expected5
After the purchase, I actually vaccum less. It works really well. The only complaints are it is noise and the replacement parts are expensive. So turn it on when you go out and try not to break an parts.....

    Roomba Va...vooom5
This is a great unit to clean up normal litter on the floors.Amazed how well it moves from Carpet to Hardwood floors without help. Doesn't eliminate regular vaccumm cleaners but reduces the need significantly.

    Regret Purchase1
I purchased this after a friend strongly recommended it. Unfortunately, I have had a completely different experience. When I tried to use the scooba for the first time it would not move at all. The recommendation from their tech support worked. Yet, it is still a disappoint. One of the benefits of the scooba, is that it picks up the dirty water. Mine doesn't. This problem has not been resolved by tech support. I recommend you save your money and get your husband to do it.

    works4
the remanufactured scooba works well. no problems. however it didn't look new. scooba didn't work to my expectation, and would not pay retail for it. scooba don't seems to be as smart as the roomba, which i also have.
4 stars for jobs it does at the price, 160.00 i paid, but if i paid full price for it i would return it.

    Scooby-Does4
We've been wanting the Scooba (we named ours 'Scooby' of course-what else?) floor cleaning 'bot since getting our Roomba and we're not disappointed. Although noisy during TV time, it works great and cleans well, especially considering what our two active and always shedding Texas Healers track in from the backyard. Its easy to prep and simple to clean after each job. The only issue that keeps our rating from being a 5-star is battery run time; our Scooby seems to run out of gas while there's still half a tank full of cleaning solution. We'd would've liked to see it go the distance, at least until the solution is almost out.
In any case, great job Roomba - you've done it again!

    Great5
This product was delivered early and has been great to have. I ended up buying another one for my Mother. We both love it....good quality, easy to use!

Have had for over a year now!!!4
I have had three other discoveries all brand new and not remanufactured and had to return them all after a few months due to different problems.
I decided to give a remanufactured one a try and have owned it for over a year now and had zero problems with it. I use it twice a week on my 2700sq foot house and is my main floor cleaner.
I think the remanufactured ones have had the problems fixed and now are good to go and at a much better price. How great is that!

Higher Probability of a failure with a Remanufactured Unit2
I bought a new Discovery iRobot for my temporary apartment at work, and it worked so well, that I decided to save a few bucks and buy a remanufactured iRobot for my home. The first rebuilt unit did not charge the battery and never did run. Amazon took it back and delivered an replacement. The second unit worked fine for the weekend. I left for a month on assignment and unfortunately did not read the warnings about not leaving the unit charging for extended periods without running it. Yep, unit would not run when I got back. I was past the 90 day warranty period, so ordered a new battery $70. I charged it for a day. Power button was green. It immediately turned red when the Clean button was pressed. 48 hours of charging still shows red. Charger puts out 22v so is prob ok. Cleaned battery contacts. No good. Unit is kaput. I will salvage parts to use in my one working unit. Too bad the new 500 series uses different battery packs and accessories. I will buy a new 500 series in the shortly. Gave only 2 stars cause although my remanufactured unit worked great, as my other one does, it quit, either due to my error, or whatever caused it to be returned in the first place struck again. New units are fantastic. Rebuilt units, well, that's my misfortune. My old rule of never buying used electronics will be reinstated after this lesson.
